Photochromic Lenses

What Are Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses, also called 'transition lenses' or 'Transitions', are fascinating technology that combines regular glasses and sunglasses in one product. The lenses automatically change their darkness level according to the amount of UV radiation in the environment.

The Complete Process: Clear to Dark and Back

Indoors (shaded area): lenses are almost completely transparent (about 10-15% tint). Without UV radiation, molecules are in their relaxed state

Going outside: within 30-60 seconds, lenses begin to darken. Molecules react to UV radiation and change structure

In full sun: lenses reach maximum darkness of 85-90% (similar to regular sunglasses). Darkness level depends on UV radiation intensity and temperature

Returning inside: within 2-5 minutes, lenses become transparent again. Molecules return to original state without UV radiation

⚠️ Important to know: the speed of darkening and clearing is affected by ambient temperature. In cold weather, lenses reach a deeper darkness but take longer to clear. In hot weather, lenses may not reach their maximum darkness but will clear more quickly.

How Does It Work?

The lenses contain special molecules of silver chloride or organic compounds embedded within the lens. When the molecules are exposed to UV radiation from the sun, they undergo a chemical process that causes them to change the structure of their chemical bonds. This change causes the molecules to absorb more visible light, which darkens the lens. When there's no UV radiation, the molecules return to their original state and the lens clears.

  • 1 Maximum convenience - one pair of glasses for all needs: indoors and outdoors
  • 2 Economic savings - no need to buy separate sunglasses
  • 3 Complete UV protection - 100% protection from UVA and UVB rays, whether lenses are light or dark
  • 4 Automatic adaptation - lenses adapt themselves to all lighting conditions
  • 5 Reduced eye fatigue - eyes don't need to strain against sudden lighting changes
  • 6 Color variety - available in various tints: gray, brown, green, and more

What lenses do we use?

NXT-029PH Photochromic Lenses – Sun-Adaptive Technology

NXT lenses offer an exceptional combination of strength, flexibility, and durability, featuring intelligent color-adaptation technology: the lenses automatically darken and lighten in response to UV intensity. Indoors, the lenses remain nearly clear at just 5% tint, while in full sunlight they darken to up to 90%.

Key Advantages of NXT Lenses Over Competing Brands:

  • Maximum Darkness: NXT lenses darken to 91% – comparable to standard sunglasses – while competitors typically reach only around 75%.
  • Long-Term Durability: Optimal performance for approximately 5 years with minimal degradation. Competing lenses often deteriorate within months, remaining at 10-20% tint when "clear" and reaching only about 60% in full sunlight.
  • Lightweight Comfort: Lighter and more flexible than competing lenses.
  • Safety Standards: Meet ANSI Z87.1 ballistic standards with full UV400 protection (100% UV filtration).
